Pinterest is one of the simplest, yet very effective ways to connect people. Even though it only focuses on pictures, but like they say " A picture is worth a thousand words". I think of pintrest as a "pictures only" Encyclopedia. It has everything, from fashion, to recipes, to arts and crafts you name it. I like to follow many of the healthy cooking users. Its always nice to see what the food will look like before you start cooking. I also follow Clothing brands like Lululemon and H&M. It makes me always up to date with the new trends.
One of the NGO that exemplifies good use of Pintrest is Donorworx. https://www.pinterest.com/donorworx/

I like their board because they cover a variety of topics from their own work, to other NGO's work ( like save the children) to good reads, good quotes and healthy foods and recipes. I also thought it was very clever to put pictures of their new office and furniture. It made me feel more connected as I have seen them behind the scenes.

Pinterest Love!

I am a big fan of Pinterest!

On my personal page I categorize my pinterest into specific topic boards: Eat, Wear, Live, Go, Craft, Move. It helps me stay organized and also breaks it down into my interests and the purpose of being on Twitter. I follow friends and different bloggers that pin and post about six boards. Below is a little snapshot of some of my latest repins and an example of some of the things I often pin.

A really great nonprofit Pinterest account is the World Wildlife Fund. My partner is a big animal and nature junkie and has a yearly subscription to National Geographic and makes monthly donations to the Worldlife Fund which is how I learned about their page

A board of theirs I really love is their "Help Our Planet" board. They make really cool infographics about endangered species like the one below.

Very informative, eye catching and ties followers back to the cause.  They also post really cute pictures of polar bears and other animals. Check their Pinterest page!

Pinterest!

So far my interests have been strictly entertainment: yoga, enticing recipes, funny memes, decor, art, and photography. I love just scrolling through and clicking on, and maybe liking or pinning, this and that. Until now I hadn't thought Pinterest was a good fit for a non for profit. Soooo, add that to my social media to-do list for work! Add Pinterest!

I think PETA makes good use of Pinterest because:
  • They use shock value to draw attention
  • They mix cute memes in with shocking images so they attract a bigger audience
  • They have a lot of celebrity endorsements (especially on the Celebs board)
  • They use infographics
  • They use language that is common and shows that they really care and believe what they are saying (authentic)
  • They cater to their audience, which is animal lovers
  • They use the platform to educate, starting with children
  • They seem to have something for everyone, from food to fashion to cute animals to celebrities to comedy

Seniors living options expanded in Lloydminster

October 8, 2015

Lloydminster Continuing Care Centre provides spaces, supports for local seniors

LLOYDMINSTER — A new 60-bed continuing care facility, opening today, will help meet the growing and changing needs for local seniors care.
The Lloydminster Continuing Care Centre replaces a 55-bed long-term care wing, built in 1972 at the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre, and adds five additional continuing care spaces to the community. Fifty long-term care beds remain at the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre, in a wing built in 1992, and will continue to serve Lloydminster and area.
“Our government understands how important it is to people to be able to age in their homes and communities,” says Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Alberta Health. “This new centre means people from Lloydminster and area can be close to family and friends while receiving excellent care in a more home-like setting.”
“The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to partner with Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Prairie North Health Region (PNHR) to ensure that the health care needs of the people of Lloydminster and area are met,” adds Lloydminster MLA Colleen Young, on behalf of Saskatchewan Health Minister Dustin Duncan.“This new long-term care facility is providing quality care to residents and families of this unique community.”
Long-term care is designed specifically for individuals with complex, often unpredictable medical needs. The Lloydminster Continuing Care Centre offers health and personal care supports in private rooms with the added security of having professional nursing care and support staff available on-site 24-hours a day.
Such assistance is valuable to seniors and adults with disabilities, not only in Lloydminster but from the surrounding area, says Sherie Allen, Senior Operating Officer, North, with AHS Central Zone.
“This is a wonderful addition for the community,” says Allen. “This new facility provides the community with more beds to support local residents in remaining as close to home as possible while receiving the health care and support they need as they age.”
The Lloydminster Continuing Care Centre is part of a $34.2-million project that provides not only the new continuing care centre for the community, but also the construction of a small addition to support service areas at the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre.
While the new facility is owned by AHS, it will be operated by Saskatchewan’s PNHR, providing care to area residents on both sides of the provincial border.
“We have a unique health care partnership that helps us meet the health care needs in the growing border city and surrounding area,” says PNHR Board Chair Bonnie O’Grady.
“As the population continues to increase and age, the demand for continuing care also continues to increase each year. The Lloydminster Continuing Care Centre is an important step in meeting that demand. This facility provides residents with the necessary, quality care they need, in an environment that supports them in maintaining the highest quality of life possible.”
Prairie North Health Region is the Saskatchewan health region responsible for the delivery of health services to over 80,000 residents in northwest central Saskatchewan and all residents of the border city of Lloydminster. Prairie North’s mission is to work with individuals and communities to achieve the safest and best possible care, experience and health for the people we serve.
Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.

Rational

The original press release was well written. However, there were a couple of ways that improved it.

Firstly, it was long and had too many quote from 3 separate people. Optimizing it for the web included using pull quotes, headings and a better title. I further improved the article by including my contact information and the long link to increase SEO.

I also added an image to encourage distribution and social engagement. To further social sharing I included three hashtags, which is all new for AHS #Lloydminster #continuingcare and #seniors.

The keywords (bolded) include Lloydminster, Continuing Care, Seniors Care and AHS. These keywords were already included in the original News Release.

The inductees will be honored at a gala celebration on Saturday, November 14, 2015 in St. John’s.
The eight inductees for 2015 are:
• Lewis Stoyles, St. John’s;

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Hall of Fame was launched in 2012 by The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with the primary goal of honoring, documenting and recognizing the significant efforts of those in our community who have made long-standing volunteer efforts.  The event is not only a tribute for the inductees; it also raises much needed funds to support The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“The Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Hall of Fame aims to enshrine the achievements of both individuals and organizations that have set the standards for selfless giving without reward or gain, for all to see,” said Edward Roberts, Chair of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. “The Volunteer Hall of Fame also aligns perfectly with the mission of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award - providing youth with an opportunity to see the gold standard in volunteering and giving. 3) Statement & Explanation

The intended audience of the message would be nonprofit organizations- their staff and board and community members engaged in volunteering as well as donors who contribute to nonprofit organizations and charities. The tools that will be used to reach that audience are distributing the press release via media sources, promoting the event through email newsletters, posters, social media posts and advertisements in local papers. Also,  connecting with nonprofit organizations to promote it to their donors, staff and board through their newsletters, email lists and networks. This is also a fundraising and community event so promotions at community centres and to possible donors will be necessary.

My first  change to the press release was adding links to pertinent information for those wanting to learn more about the award, the event and the background behind it. The press release also did not include descriptions of the 2015 inductees so linking to the backgrounder was very important. The addition of a pullout quote also helped to emphasis the purpose of the event. I also added images- of the award and the logo of the organization to create brand recognition through the use of the logo and to break up the amount of text and showcase the actual award. Lastly, I bolded key words around the reasons behind the award, and the purpose of the event. Highlighting the fact that it is also a fundraising gala was very important to clarify that further galas are supported by the success of this year’s event. Overall my changes were made to increase readers understanding of the event and increase their likelihood of attendance through images and description.

I LOVE PINTEREST!!!

Pinterest has literally changed my life!
  • Need a recipe to use up those apples the neighbour gave me? Pinterest
  • Need a title for my scrapbook page? Pinterest
  • Ways to tie my scarf? Pinterest
  • Clean my stove? Pinterest
  • Halloween decorating, costume ideas, pumpkin carving, treats? Pinterest
I use Pinterest all the time. I pin on boards that I've created that cover every aspect of what I enjoy most. Even boards on social media that I use for work. I love it! Just ask my kids how many new meals they've tried thanks to Pinterest. :)

Pinterest is fun and easy to use. It is visually appealing and a great resource to save great ideas that you can use now or in the future. Pinterest is a good way to use social media for your business as it allows you to use a captivating photograph to snag people's attention and bring them to your brand.

For the most part I just follow my friends and people with shared interests.I think Pinterest does a good job of "suggesting" pins of interest to you.

The Breast Cancer Society of Canada uses Pinterest well. They pin about local fundraisers, blogs, products, and even have a "Pin to Donate" board sponsored by Bayer. Check them out!
